SAN DIEGO – Years of planning, coordinating, and designing an historic school came to life Wednesday, with the start of construction on Mission Valley’s first elementary school.
Located at the corner of Via Alta and Civita Boulevard, the preschool-through-fifth-grade campus will serve those living in the new Civita development, as well as residents in the Mission Valley and Fashion Valley neighborhoods.
“The rapid growth in Mission Valley is an opportunity to model a new vision for a San Diego Unified School,” said Cindy Marten, Superintendent of San Diego Unified. “One that is future oriented and grounded in sustainability.”
Near a transit line and featuring bike racks and electric vehicle charging stations, the new elementary school in Mission Valley is the result of years of planning and collaboration with Sudberry Properties, who is currently developing the former sand and gravel quarry into a pedestrian friendly, mixed-use community.
“We’re excited to welcome SDUSD’s next-generation elementary school to Civita,” said Marco Sessa, senior vice president of Sudberry Properties, which is developing the community with the Grant family, owners of the former quarry site since the early 1900s. “The Grant family has an unwavering commitment to education, and they have been a driving force behind the creation of this school,” he said. “We were happy to partially subsidize the sale of the property because we see education as a vital part of our live-work-play vision for Civita.”
The new campus will have one and two-story classroom halls, an administration building, a library with a maker space, a multipurpose building with an auditorium, and outdoor hard courts with grass play areas.
Construction is anticipated to be completed in spring 2022. A formal naming process will begin once a principal has been hired to oversee the campus, which typically occurs one year before the school opens. In this case, that means spring 2021.
The campus will hold up to 500 students; enrollment could happen as early as spring 2022.
