San Diego Daily Transcript – Builder of the Year named at Awards

The Building Industry Association of San Diego recently held its biggest annual event, highlighting the best of what builders and those in related industries have brought to the region from early 2011 through this summer.

In all, 30 awards went out at the Icon Awards, the third version of the BIA-hosted awards ceremony. But only one group of affiliated companies — The Corky McMillin Cos. — left with the distinction of being named San Diego’s “Builder of the Year.”

In choosing the best of the best, BIA San Diego recognized a number of companies and their employees — ranging from homebuilders to architects, specialty contractors, developers and consultants — as award finalists in the weeks before the event.

Categories ranged from Best Interior Design for Single-family Homes to Best Architectural Design for Multi-family Residences. In all, there were 29 categories on the list of finalists, released in August.

But one category, the distinction of Best Builder — perhaps the Icon Awards’ most coveted honor — wasn’t listed at all. Guests had to wait to find out who was up for that prize.

BIA San Diego bestowed that honor upon The Corky McMillin Cos., comprising McMillin Homes, McMillin Commercial, McMillin Land Development, McMillin Home Mortgage and McMillin Realty.

With a history dating back more than 50 years, The Corky McMillin Cos. has built nearly 30,000 residences, 16 mixed-use master-planned communities, parks, roads, shopping centers, college dormitories, and commercial and industrial parks.

The designation complements awards earned by The Corky McMillin Cos. at the 2010 Icon Awards, including the Industry Professional of the Year, Best Designed Master-Planned Community — for Liberty Station — and Best Project Manager awards.

Sudberry Properties Inc. made a significant showing at the event as well, as the mixeduse developer and its design teams at MVE & Partners and Lifescapes International locked in the honors in the categories of Best Architectural Design and Best Landscape Design for multifamily residences for Sudberry’s Circa 37 at Civita development in Mission Valley.

The award for Best Architectural Design for single family homes went to the team of Dahlin Group Architecture Planning and Warmington Residential California for their Seaside Highlands project in Encinitas. Dahlin Group also took home the Best Architectural Design Award for specialty or project spaces for its design of the Marion V. Ashley Community Center, located in the Riverside County city of Menifee.

For custom homes, the Best Architectural Design award went to Nakhshab Development & Design for the Shayan House in Mission Hills.
