Teams are forming for the American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life at Civita’s temporary park on June 21-22. The overnight community fundraising walk consists of teams who camp out together and take turns walking laps. This family-friendly event features food, games and activities throughout the 24-hour event. The park is located at the intersection of Civita Boulevard and Via Alta. The Relay for Life of Mission Valley will raise funds for a variety of local and national American Cancer Society services for patients and on-going cancer research. The event kicks off at 10 a.m. Saturday morning with an Opening Ceremony followed by the celebratory Survivor’s Lap and the gratitude-filled Caregivers Lap.
After dark, there is a Luminaria Ceremony to recognize friends and family members who have been lost to cancer, to honor people who have fought cancer in the past and to support those whose fight continues. During the ceremony candles are lit inside personalized bags that ring the Relay track and offer a glowing and incredibly moving tribute to people affected by the disease.
“The emotionally powerful Fight Back Ceremony, which helps close the relay, symbolizes the emotional commitment each of us can make in the fight against cancer,” said Relay For Life coordinator Julie Bartlett. “The action taken represents what we are willing to do for ourselves, for our loved ones, and for our community to fight cancer year-round and to commit to saving lives,” she said.
